Samsung NX10

Samsung NX10

If Henri Cartier Cartier Bresson were alive today, he probably would have appreciated the Samsung NX10. Bresson adored his tiny taped-up Leica CL, because he understood very well that a large camera can be intimidating in public. Bresson liked to wait for the decisive moment while disappearing in the background.

Lenses on SLR’s and DSLR’s have become bigger and bigger, None of us like to switch lenses in the middle of shooting, so we prefer zoom lenses with a very large range, resulting in giant cameras. This is not a problem at all when covering public events with other photographers around, but the same equipment is almost useless if you want to observe and photograph more intimate scenes in streets, parks or public transport. People often find it irritating to be photographed by strangers. Especially if they look like professional photographers.

The best way to disappear in a crowd on a photographic mission is to look like a tourist or an outsider, carrying a camera that appears to be made for holiday snapshots. As far as the Samsung NX10 is concerned, looks can be deceiving. Just have a look at the specs:

* 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor (presumed to be close relation to Pentax K7 sensor)
* 14.6 million effective pixels
* New Samsung NX mount (25.5mm flange-back distance)
* 720P movie capture (H.264, 30 fps)
* Contrast-detect autofocus
* 3.0″ AMOLED screen (614,000 dots, PenTile RGB array)
* 921k dot Electronic Viewfinder
* 30mm F2 pancake and 18-55mm standard zoom options

Please note the Electronic viewfinder. The Samsung NX10 has no mirror which I think is a good thing, because moving parts in a camera body are easily damaged and the flip flopping mirrors also have a tendency to wipe dust particles from the camera compartment onto the sensor.
